1949 Harley-Davidson FL

4 Stroke
74 cu. in.

The motor was delivered today, all but the intake and exhaust valves (with the spring sets) for the front head.

Upon inspection, we found the valve guides to be worn and in need of replacement.

We replaced all 4 valve guides, assembled the heads & installed them on the motor.

Now the engine is ready to be installed into the frame.

1949 marked the first year for Harley's "Hydra-Glide" suspension. These telescopic forks were mounted on all the FL solo models, while the sidecar units still ran a springer front suspension. Spring forks were done away with completely in 1950 with the introduction of and adjustable Hydra-Glide fork for the sidecar units. The bikes still lacked any form of rear suspension.
